The Citadel crowns the peak above Sevakand's capital city of Yarom, safe on its side of the three-hundred meter deep chasm separating the town from the King's palace. Inside, it teems with petty bureaucrats known contemptuously as ghouls, sultry courtesans called orvi, and the dedicated servants and soldiers of House Aravon, known respectively as sev' and din'. It is a seething pot of intrigue and ambition ruled by a House so competent no one really ever expects to bring it down. But it doesn't keep them from trying.

Map hand-drawn by the author. Interestingly, this rather crude sketch is what the cover artist, William R. Warren, used to do the initial 3D rendering of what the Citadel looks like. All the architecture changed after that, but that first glimpse of a fully-rounded world leaping off the page was a wow! moment in the development of the series.
